The Artist

Alison Ryde

Alison Ryde

Montefalco, Umbria, Italy

Alison Ryde’s artistic narrative is one of geographical and spiritual evolution. Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Alison established herself as a vital figure in the Pacific art scene, serving as President of the Canterbury Society of Arts and receiving numerous accolades for her evocative landscapes and figurative works.

In 1995, Alison made a life-changing move to Umbria, Italy—a transition that brought a fresh, contemporary perspective to her work. Immersed in the "Good Earth" of the Italian countryside, her art evolved to reflect the textures of ancient hill towns, the silver-green of olive orchards, and the vibrant energy of local traditions. This "modern spin" on Italian heritage has led to solo exhibitions in Rome, Venice, and throughout the historic museums of Umbria, including the prestigious Complesso Museale San Francesco in Montefalco.

Alison’s reach is truly global. Her pieces are found in the corporate headquarters of Qantas and the NZ Law Society, as well as private collections in New York, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Whether painting for the Vinarelli wine festival or creating contemporary works of Umbrian landscapes, Alison’s art remains grounded in an authentic appreciation for the beauty of the everyday.

Alison’s technical foundation is rooted in formal training and a lifetime of continuous exploration across international masterclasses.

  • 1964–66 University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ
  • 1966 Graduate, Christchurch Teachers College (Art with Distinction)
  • 1979–83 Advanced Studies: University of Otago & University of Canterbury
  • 1993 Masterclass Tutor, Christchurch Gallery
  • Honors Honorary Life Member of the Ashburton Society of Arts

Exhibiting since 1967, Alison’s early career was defined by the landscapes of New Zealand, with features in the country’s most prestigious institutions, including the NZ Academy of Fine Arts and the Canterbury Society of Arts. Since 1995, her focus has shifted almost exclusively to Italy, where she has captured the soul of its historic hill-top towns and rural heart in solo and group exhibitions across the peninsula.
